The “Academy of Nascenti and Strepitosi” Restaurant is open every day for dinner, except on Sunday. For groups we offer the possibility of organizing banquets on demand at any time.
The restaurant is named for the meeting place of the Academies of Nascenti and Strepitosi, founded in Frascati in 1646. At the end of 16th century modern Academies were born in Rome. They were composed of people who met regularly to discuss political and social matters. These members would meet in buildings owned by the local nobility or in poor taverns depending upon where they were from. They were business men, scientists, artists or common people, who would take time together simply to have a laugh.
The names of the Academies came from satiric and ironic words that the members came up with. A book says that around the year 1650 two Academies were created in Tuscolo: “Li Strepitosi di Frascati” (meaning the “burning ones”) and “I Nascenti di Frascati” (those who are “born and growing”). After a few years the same groups were formed in other Italian towns (Urbino, Cento, Codogno, Livorno e Orci-Novi). Unfortunately the remaining news of these Academies only refers to their names and logo.
During the 1600’s there was much conflict in Frascati between politicians and Church defenders, so much so that the Prelate of Frascati’s Cathedral mocked the district council calling them “farmers sitting on politicians’ chairs”. The Academies made jokes about these events for years. How much have things changed since then?
